Heres a note from the Slaithwaite Grocers . Why not go and visit them, and the lovely hamlet – village – town -( delete as you feel appropriate) that is Slaithwaite….

Hi
I work at the Green Valley Grocer in Slaithwaite near Huddersfield. We sell fruit and veg loose and people can have no packaging or bag at all, or choose a brown paper bag from a range of sizes, we have a few carrier bags that people have donated to us that have already been used, just for if people insist on one! Also people cut down on waste buying from us as you can just buy as much as you need, a single onion (say) for 9p (say) and that’s fine with us.

London – loose foods

Unpackaged is a shop in London where you can buy your stuff loose – that’s with no packaging. You take your own containers and refill them as you want.

You can even get oil, in your own bottle, and mafia free wine from the barrel.

Here’s their mission statement

Welcome to Unpackaged- the better way for you to buy organic food and environmentally friendly products for you and your home.

We believe that a lot of packaging is unnecessary so we’ve removed it;  just bring your own containers and reuse them each time you shop.

This means you can buy just the amount you want and save money by not wasting anything. And going packaging-free means less waste goes to landfill.

And here is a really good write-up here.

You bloody lucky, soft, Southern, big girls blouses …er ….sorry …forgot myself for a moment there

scoop and save loose food

Long time ago when I was young we used to visit the Weigh & Save shop in the precinct down the road. In it were a number of  big bins containing everything from beans to cornflakes. You  scooped what you needed into the bags provided, in the quantities you wanted then weighed and paid at the till. I loved it.

But  then I grew up and moved away and never thought of it until I tried to go plastic free. I realized that this  was  exactly the kind of shop I needed right now. Of course I would have to provide my own plastic free bags but….enough said. I eagerly returned to the precinct of my youth, Stretford it was, only to find the shop had shut up and gone.

So began the research quest….  and in conclusion, yes such shops still exist but they are bloody hard to track down. They go under a variety of names including

Weigh & Save

Scoop & Save

Weigh House

The parent company  that supplies the products does not have a list of outlets they deliver to (!) but can help you set up a shop if you are interested.

Locations of Scoop & Save Shops

I found shops  in

Bridlington

Whitby

Northwhich

You might come across the address of one in  Barnsley but when I visited it had closed down.

Martins money saving fans have a forum over here listing shops they know of

Feel free to join in.

Google turns up a list of addresses under Weigh and Save  but do double check before you go…mysearch for a local store led me to  some very strange paths and was ultimatly unsuccessful.

Loose frozen food – Emley Moor

Pain Au Chocolat – home bake

Pain Au Raisen - Home Bake

Yorkshire Puds  Ready Made

Fruits of the forest and other soft fruits

Roast veg – peppers to potatoes

Fish Cakes

Just some of the frozen stuff sold loose at Emly Moor Farm Shop.

Here is the company who supply them. The Emley Moor shop doesn’t stock the full range, but it will give you an idea of what’s available.

Heres how it works. Using the little scoop you shovel what you want into the bags provided.

Of course the bags provided are plastic but take your own bio bags (corn starch bags – made from vegetables they are fully compostable)  and the plastic bag problem is solved.

Bio bags are fine to use in the freezer.

Bio bags

Bio plastic is made from plant-based materials such as corn starch, potato starch etc. Because of this they are compostable and they will biodegrade in your garden compost heap. I also read somewhere that you can return them to the food chain i.e feed them to your pig. Check that one out before you try.

Bio plastic can be used to make CARRIER BAGS…  PRODUCE BAGS…  POOP BAGS… BIN LINERS

Bio plastic bags are water proof for a limited amount of time – eventually there is seepage but you can certainly use them to carry fish or meat home. They also make great freezer bags.

Bio bags are the bags used in Modbury the plastic free town.

I find the 6 liter size best to take shopping. The 8 litre is obviously bin liner size, and eyebrows are raised when you ask to have your steak put in a bin liner.

Bio plastic bags can be bought from hundreds of shops on the internet, including Amazon & Ebay, and here where the money raised from the sale goes to charity.
