plastic free rubbers

August 29, 2009

I didn’t know that pvc was found in rubbers but here you go ….

PVC Free Rubber

from the blurb….

PVC-free thermoplastic rubber erasers, measuring 35×31x8mm, manufactured in the EU.
PVC has long been recognised as a particularly hazardous plastic – vinyl chloride itself being a known carcinogen threatening the liver, and the byproduct dioxins from manufacture and incineration can persist long in the environment and travel great distances; these are linked to immune system suppression, reproductive disorders and cancer.
These can also be overprinted with your organisation’s own details – please see our Printed Promotional Products page for more details.

For those of you who have given up plastic pens for wooden pencils need a sharpener but dont fancy buying 20, try one of these

Sustainably-Sourced Wooden Pencil Sharpener
Only: £4.45
Cylindrical wooden double pencil sharpener with collection tray. Made from 100% sustainably-sourced wood in Germany. This sharpener has two different diameter cutters and is extremely strong and robust for frequent use.

If you have given up plastic pens for wooden pencils you will of course need  pencil sharpener. I guess the boy scouts amongst you could use your sharp knives but I bought myself a

NATARAJ 621 sharpener with Japanese technology sharpens without a break

made by Hindustan Pencils Ltd price 3 rupees including tax.

It is, sad to say, plastic.

If I was in dear old blighty, I could have used my trusty metal one – see photo. If you dont have one already you can buy the Q Connect Metal Pencil Sharpener from at a cost of £13.39 for a pack of 20.

Hey you can give them to your friends, use them for your eyeliner, have a spare at the office … the list is endless.

I believe you can resharpen the blades.

PENS

While in India I have had to buy two plastic pens. That’s not because I am writing like a demon but because my first Indian pen leaked. The second is much better made… but it uses up a whole load of plastic so much so, I almost find it offensive.

Back home I use my cornstarch pen and my fountain pen but I have to say the cornstarch pens are not that good. The retractable mechanism jams and the ink is blotchy. The fountain pen is great.

However neither is a good traveling companion.

I had resigned myself to having to buy plastic pens again when I visited “No Plastic Reducing Plastic for a Happier Planet”. DUH – why didn’t I think of – pencils – wooden pencils .

The Green Pen

February 4, 2008

Jaunuary has been a busy month and changing over sites has taken more time than I would have liked…Still here I am and ready to ask you this question – since when did pens become disposable?
Here is a one of the worlds finest inventions as radical in its time as the computer has been in ours treated as a throwaway piece of rubbish

This month not only am I ridding the world of plastic I am reinstating dignity to the much abused pen. So I have bought myself a fountain pen with refillable cartridge.

However I am bad with pens – years of abusing them can not be wiped out in a moment. Used to loosing them destroying them throwing them away without a backward glance means I am careless. I need to change my relationship with pens.

In the meantime I don’t want to loose my expensive fountain pen so  I have bought some disposable pens – pens that biodegrade – pens the body of which is made from corn starch. Sadly the ones I bought were shaped to look like sweet corn. You can buy plain square ones.

pen.jpg
NB only the body is biodegradable.
At the moment biodegradble pens are generally offered wholesale but you can buy them in tens from www.greenstat.co.uk
Fountain pen for inside mad,  sweet corn pen for outside, change of attitude being developed. Respect the pen.
