Plastic? Rubber? Just plain weird? Used for everything  from ice cube trays to adult toys to cake tins it certainly gets around. So what is silicone?? Silicon is a natural chemical element. Silicone polymers are derived from silicon and so silicone is a  man-made product derived from silicon a natural element. Silicon is generally found [...]

This is part one in our series answering the much asked question of why we don’t drink bottled water when travelling. I am lucky enough to live in a country that supplies clean drinkable tap water so obviously I don’t need to buy bottled water there. However we spend a lot of time in countries [...]

When I started my boycott  I soon realized that giving up plastic would be no  easy ride  but I didn’t really know just how insidious plastic was. In my ignorance I made mistakes. For instance  I thought shiny cardboard was shiny because, oh I don’t know, it had been varnished or something. It wasn’t until [...]

Forget oil, forget plants, now its chickens. Waste Chicken Feathers Made Into Bioplastic – Ecofriend. Yes you can make plastic out of just about anything BUT just because its made out of biodegradable products don’t mean that the plastic itself will biodegrade. It’s still the same indestructible stuff that will go on to cause all [...]

You might think thats a plant based plastic will be compostable – well be careful here, some are but not all … read this from Beth over at fake Plastic Fish t turns out that just as I thought, PepsiCo’s new plant-based plastic is chemically just the same as petroleum-based plastic. PET is made up [...]

As you know I am not into plastic  disposables  or single use items but there are some products which need to be both – I thinking medical/emergency supplies. In such cases plastic is often the cheapest and most suitable product. Is there a way to make the disposal of such products easier / more natural? [...]

Pain in the Jars

Back in the early days of the boycott I didn’t think of glass  jars as an issue – after all they wasn’t plastic so it wasn’t a problem. Of course it was you numbskull. Look at the lids – that white sticky stuff – the seal? That’s plastic that is… (For more information read these [...]

I did rather wonder what the plastic was on the inside of my lids and Googling around and I found this from the containers and packaging site “Plastisol liners are one method that helps seal metal closures onto containers. Plastisol is a PVC gasket that is used in metal continuous thread and lug (sometimes called [...]

Plastic can be made from plants. While  not all plant based plastics   are biodegradable, these  are  (the definitions were taken from Wikipedia : Polyhydroxyalkanoates or  PHAs are linear polyesters produced in nature by bacterial fermentation of sugar or lipids. They are produced by the bacteria to store carbon and energy. Poly(lactic acid) or polylactide (PLA) is a biodegradable, thermoplastic, aliphatic polyester derived [...]

This is one big bummer for the plastic free freak – seemingly paper products that have a thin plastic liner.  It strengthens the products and makes it waterproof which is obviously why they use it. Plasticized paper products include paper cups, book covers, a whole range of  shiny cardboard  products, labels, individual wraps of  sugar, [...]
