How to …suck…plastic free

We are having so much trouble with straws, we keep saying “no straw”, drinks keep coming with straws. Next time I go out I am going to bring my own reusable straw and insist drink purveyers use that.

I will choose one of the following

reusable stainless steel

or  glass straws

to  cornstarch disposable /compostable straws.

That’ll teach ‘em.

You can find out HOW TO …do all sorts of other things… plastic free right here

  1. I say no straws! I used to work in a resturaunt and they’re so unhygenic. I saw waitresses put them in drinks with their dirty hands, or after they were on the floor. Blech!

  2. I remember paper straws from way back then…Tried to find some, a while ago. Are they still being sold ?

    • Blimey I remember those. Remember they used to get soggy and stick together so you couldn’t suck anymore? No, I haven’t seen them anywhere in ages. If you check out the carnival post featuring your movie there is a link to start alternatives. I need some cos they will not stop giving me straws over here in Asia. Driving me nuts.

  3. I´m fed up with it. As soon as I walk in a bar restaurant I have to look about & see if straws are the “norm” which 9 of 10 times they are. I just wanna go out & not be on plastic alert!

    • Oh dear – but then maybe I don’t like paying for your “free” straw or the clean up costs involved. And as I am doing that 9 times out of ten I think you are getting the better deal.

      • Free? Who mentioned free? You need to read the comment first before you get on the offensive!

I´ve refused them for nearly 4 years. Hence why I´m getting a bit fed up with it! & refusing cups. Constantly. I´m starting to avoid going out fed up with all my nature & surfers friends apologising to me because they forgot their cups (why apologise to me??) & me feeling like a freak! It´s getting to me….

So don´t worry, your not paying for my straws or picking them up. Though to be fair, before I knew I was a waitress for years & dished them out like sweets, so I spose I can´t complain that others do….

      • I am glad that I have misread your comment and that you do refuse straws. Hooray.

I am sorry for misinterpretting it, but I read the comment the other way, that you are tired of having to check for straws and plastic do gooders making you feel guilty for doing what was the norm.

This in an arguement I have heard many times before As I am sure you know there are a lot of people – even green columnists – who think the straw debate is frivolous. This, as you can see, annoys me deeply

So thanks for correcting me and thanks for refusing straws and sorry for putting you in with the bad guys. But I will leave the comment up for any other bad guys who might be reading, who think straws are a small issue and people who dont like them are dreary fun busters.

        Balloons annoy me off too.

Yup I am real party pooper

  4. Thanks Pam! People who think straws are a small issue should work a shift in a restaurant. The straws here, are wrapped in plastic individually, then most of them come in plastic boxes, that come in bigger boxes wrapped in plastic. They wash up at my feet when I´m working on the tideline all the time. Yes, there are other plastic issues (a lot! Don´t get me started!) but straws are one of them, they´re not exempt. & they are SO easy to not have. I see people take them straight & put them on the table.

I can still get drunk & have fun without straws! People should try it.
