Zero Waste New Zealand

As part of our who’s who in the waste free world heres another zero waster for your delight….

From February 2008 to February 2009 we challenged ourselves to a Rubbish Free Year! The aim was to avoid creating as little landfill waste as possible from our home in Christchurch, New Zealand. Whereas most Kiwi couples send about 1.5 tons of waste to the landfill each year, that year we sent just 2kg, it all fitted in a supermarket bag! By reusing, rehoming, recycling, and the fourth R – refusing, we actually discovered it wasn’t that hard once the habit was formed to reduce our landfill output. We’re still living rubbish free, even though we’re now in the situation of house sitting meaning we move every few weeks! We cart a bokashi system around for our organic waste and use whatever recycling services are available in the area we find ourselves. We’ve recently given our website: www.rubbishfree.co.nz a revamp so that now there is an online database of ideas and suggestions on how to reduce landfill waste. So far we have over 80 topics, so type in toothpaste for example, and you’ll get a recipe for making your own as well as a brand you can buy which comes in metal tubes which can be recycled. There’s also an online store with some products we’ve found really helpful. We’d love to hear your ideas and suggestions for the guide regardless of where you are in the world so please drop us an email if you have something to add!

You can follow him here www. rubbishfree.co.nz  and you can meet other plastic refuseniks here.

If you want your anti plastic project, waste busting, dumpster diving project featured in the Plastic Free Who’s Who do this now – we would love to have you xx

  • Plastic lasts for ever and we are using it to make one use, throwaway items. We have created everlasting rubbish and plastic litter is increasing exponentially. Plastic pollution is destroying the landscape, killing wildlife and poisoning the seas.
    .
Evidence is also emerging that the plastic we use in everyday to wrap our food, wear next to our skin and use to decorate our homes may well be poisoning us.
