The joys of composting

October 23, 2009

The best way to achieve plastic free bins is to take up composting. No wet squidgy stuff in your bins means no need for bin liners – Ive been doing it for years now.

ALSO no wet squidgy stuff in landfill means no methane. Biodegradable matter put into landfill doesnt rot down properly and instead gives off methane gas an even more dangerous greenhouse gas.

So composting means cutting down on your plastic rubbish creation and reducing your carbon footprint – seems a no brainer to me.

You could go one step further and buy a wormery. I’ve had one for about a year now and am amazed at the quality of the compost my lovely little wrigglers have produced – fine, dark and moist, almost edible (but not quite!)

I haven’t yet taken the next step and invested in a bokashi bin which would allow me to compost meat and cooked food, but we’re lucky enough to have a council which composts these for us.

I have a wormery too – worm tea makes great plant feed. And I have a Bokashi bin too – they call me six bin pam – the fastest composter in the west. It really works – you can store a dead fish in your warm kitchen for weeks with no whiffly whiff.

A timely reminder that this is something that we should all be doing! xx
