Here is a one of the worlds finest inventions as radical in its time as the computer has been in ours treated as a throwaway piece of rubbish
This month not only am I ridding the world of plastic I am reinstating dignity to the much abused pen.
Refillable Fountain Pen
I have bought myself a fountain pen with refillable cartridge. Yes the cartridge thing is plastic but I hope I am going to get a lot of use out of it. The ink too comes in bottle with plastic lids but they are so cute I plan to up-cycle them when I get enough. I don’t actually do that much writting by hand so that might take some time.
PLASTIC WE USE
Of course the pen has plastic elements but we don’t boycott all plastics. We think that there are some valid uses for the product ( gasp!! yes I know…you can read our reasons here). This products fits into the
Plastic products that reduce the use of plastic disposables category.
Biodegradable Cornstarch Pen
However I am bad with pens – years of abusing them can not be wiped out in a moment. Used to loosing them destroying them throwing them away without a backward glance means I am careless. I need to change my relationship with pens.
In the meantime I don’t want to lose my expensive fountain pen so I have bought some disposable pens – pens that biodegrade – pens the body of which is made from corn starch. Sadly the ones I bought were shaped to look like sweet corn. You can buy plain square ones.
NB only the body is biodegradable. At the moment biodegradable pens are generally offered wholesale but you can buy them in tens from www.greenstat.co.uk
So it Fountain pen for inside, mad sweetcorn pen for outside, change of attitude being developed. Respect the pen.
Or you could just use a pencil…..

I’m sure that most people don’t think twice about the pens they use!
I have a fountain pen that I use whenever I write cheques or letters. I also use pencils quite a lot for lists and notes.
When I’m down to my last couple of biros I’ll think that I’ll buy some of these mad sweet corn ones!
A good, and thoughtful, entry with an interesting link. Thanks!

You might want to look into those inks- likely NOT biodegradable. But I like your spirit!

You mean the fountain pen ink is not biodegradable? or the cornstarch pen ink – or both. Possibly / probabaly not – but not all the products I use are biodegradable. I do in fact use plastic. For example, bottles in the bathroom but I refill them. sane with my washing up liquid. It is the abuse of plastic that gets me. It should not be a one use throw away item. Dont know how I feel about writing or for that matter ink. I like your blog, your work looks interesting x pam
